Barwang

BarwangVineyard

Meaning ‘place of water,' Barwang owes its character to land defined by rich and pristine water sources. An intrinsic care for the land is present through all aspects of our winemaking philosophy, ensuring Barwang delivers bold, flavoursome wines to enjoy.

Barwang is committed to environmentally friendly practices from the vineyard to the bottle. As the winner of the 2008 Harden Murrumburrah Landcare Group Award, the winery was recognised for a significant contribution to land care through the implementation of farm management practices within a commercial production system. Sustainable vineyard practices also ensure that its reservoirs remain pristine for generations to come. This overarching philosophy of purity and preservation saw Barwang receive a Greenpeace GREEN rating in 2009. Alongside the winery's trademark blue labels, it's a colour worn proudly.

Barwang has a pioneering history, built on the ingenuity of its founder, Peter Robertson. It was in unlikely surroundings and an occupation far removed from the burgeoning world of wine that Robertson's interest in wine first began. As an RAAF Lancaster bomber rear gunner during World War II, an 18-year-old Robertson was introduced to wine by his pilot and friend for more than 30 missions, John Seppelt.

When Robertson returned from War, he became a sheep and wheat farmer. Yet the drought of 1967-68 hit hard and he again decided to make a change and in 1969 he planted vines on the vast Barwang property. Situated on 100 hectares of remote and rolling country near Young in New South Wales, Robertson planted these vines at an elevation high enough to protect them against the region's harsh frosts. Years of wheat cropping equipped him with knowledge and understanding of the landscape.

As fate would have it, a fruit-fly outbreak the following year prevented Robertson from transporting his grape crop, so Robertson created his own wine. Having produced countless medal winning wines, consistency and dedication to excellence has seen Barwang richly rewarded.

Flagships

Years of esteemed winemaking and understanding of the region have culminated in the creation of Barwang 842 Tumbarumba Chardonnay. This award-winning wine pays homage to Tumbarumba's highest vineyard plantings, situated at an altitude of 842 metres.

Tumbarumba's cool winters and low temperatures encourage the grapes to slowly ripen, allowing maximum flavour accumulation. The granite soils in the region further contribute to the overall complexity and palate structure in Barwang 842 Tumbarumba Chardonnay. Barwang has been sourcing fruit from Tumbarumba for years and it is this understanding of the regional variations that has enabled the winery to source the best parcels of fruit for the Barwang 842 Tumbarumba Chardonnay.
